Navigating the In-Between

So many of us are inhabiting the space of the in-between. Not all of the time, but some of it. We find ourselves:

Between jobs.

Between relationships.

Between cities.

Between countries.

Between cycles of growth.

The only constant is the self that is having this experience of being in-between.

For the past year or so, this state has been enhanced to absurd proportions. (Thanks corona.) Neither here nor there. Not really satisfied but not motivated enough to actually do something about it. It’s even gotten its own name, thanks to a piece in the NY Times. It’s called languishing.

But there’s more to the in-between than the semi-zombiness too much quarantine & chill has pushed us all into. It’s a place where the seeds have been sown, but the harvest is not in sight. It’s about accepting the current state and nurturing patience when everything feels too slow.

If not now, when?

The in-between is a desert without a trusty toolkit. Or a sidekick. Or preferably both. Knowing what really works and who’s got your back in times of need is invaluable.

I’ve found that what works best for me is a steady routine. Quality time with friends, online or offline. Baking. Taking it as it is.

Finding the beauty by seeing what’s there

The in-between knows us better than we know ourselves, yet we’re not aware of it. Until it’s there.

We encounter it as a collective 3-4 times a year when the seasons change.

In the Netherlands, it feels like we’re still between winter and spring. The long days promise summer is on its way, but not just yet.

Something I wrote on this topic 2 springs ago, when there was no raging pandemic in sight, still resonates today:

These moments can last for days on end, especially during the dreary winter months, when the days are confused by their own shortness & the nights embrace us ever-so-gently.

(…)

Simply being, waiting, playing with whatever’s at hand can be so rewarding and not at all confusing. And when a new opportunity arises and a challenge appears, the in-between releases you out of its arms and nudges you in the direction of your dreams.

Blossoming at long last

Preparing for flight. Dusting off our wings and looking up at the sky.

  1. […] I’m happy to have found this in Amsterdam again, in a new neighbourhood this time. I’m back to my favourite rituals; noticing, exploring, opening up to the new. […]
